About Chung Shan Medical University

Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU) is a private comprehensive medical university located in Taichung City, Taiwan. The University is dedicated to advancing medical and health sciences education through the integration of academic learning, clinical training, and humanistic care. Supported by an affiliated medical center, CSMU provides a comprehensive environment for education, research, and healthcare services.

CSMU offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs in medicine, dentistry, nursing, allied health professions, medical sciences and technology, healthcare management, public health, and liberal arts. Through interdisciplinary education, international collaboration, and social engagement, the University contributes actively to the development of healthcare professionals and public health both in Taiwan and globally.

History & Developm

Chung Shan Medical University was founded in response to the shortage of dental professionals and the need for systematic medical education in post-war Taiwan. Initiated by Dr. Chou Ju-Chuan, the institution was approved for establishment in 1954 and formally launched as Chung Shan Dental College in 1960.

As its academic scope expanded, the institution was reorganized as Chung Shan Medical College in 1962, and later advanced to Chung Shan Medical & Dental College in 1977, reflecting the integration of medical and dental education and the strengthening of clinical training.

A major milestone was reached in 2000, when the affiliated hospital was upgraded to a medical center, significantly enhancing the University’s capacity in clinical education and healthcare services. In 2001, the Ministry of Education officially approved the institution’s renaming as Chung Shan Medical University, marking its transition into a comprehensive medical university.
