Admission Requirements

This page provides a comprehensive overview of admission requirements for international applicants to Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU).

I. General Eligibility

Applicants are generally required to:

  • Hold a recognized academic qualification appropriate to the level of study applied for
  • Meet nationality and residency requirements in accordance with relevant regulations
  • Comply with university policies and regulations governing international student admissions

Eligibility criteria may vary by program, level of study, and admission category. Applicants must always refer to official announcements and program-level admission requirements.

II. Definition of International Students

An applicant is considered an international student if they meet one of the following conditions:

1.

An individual of foreign nationality, who has never held nationality status from the Republic of China (R.O.C.) and who does not possess overseas Chinese student status at the time of application.

2.

An individual of foreign nationality who has resided overseas continuously for no less than six (6) years at the time of application.
Applicants to departments of medicine or dentistry must have resided overseas continuously for no less than eight (8) years.

  1. An individual who also holds R.O.C. nationality but has never had household registration in Taiwan.
  2. An individual who previously held R.O.C. nationality but has renounced such nationality for at least eight (8) years prior to application, as approved by the Ministry of the Interior.
  3. Individuals under (1) or (2) must not have studied in Taiwan as an overseas Chinese student, nor received placement by the University Entrance Committee for Overseas Compatriot Students in the same academic year.

An applicant of foreign nationality who concurrently holds permanent residency in Hong Kong or Macao, has never had household registration in Taiwan, and has resided in Hong Kong, Macao, or overseas continuously for at least six (6) years (or eight (8) years for medicine or dentistry).

4.

An applicant who was formerly a citizen of Mainland China, now holds foreign nationality, has never had household registration in Taiwan, and has resided overseas continuously for at least six (6) years (or eight (8) years for medicine or dentistry).

Notes on Residency Calculation

  • The six-year or eight-year period is calculated backward from the semester start date (February 1 or August 1).
  • “Overseas” refers to countries or regions other than Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macao.
  • “Continuous residence overseas” means staying in Taiwan for no more than 120 days per calendar year.

The following periods are excluded from residency calculation if supported by official documentation:

  • Enrollment in overseas youth technical training programs organized by the Overseas Community Affairs Council or MOE-approved programs
  • Study at MOE-approved Mandarin Language Centers in Taiwan (total less than two years)
  • Exchange programs (total less than two years)
  • Internships in Taiwan approved by a central government authority (total less than two years)

III. Educational (Academic) Background

Applicants must possess academic qualifications equivalent to Taiwan’s education system:

1. Degree Requirements

  • Bachelor’s programs: High school diploma or equivalent (including graduating students)
  • Master’s programs: Bachelor’s degree
  • Doctoral programs: Master’s degree

Applicants graduating from foreign or Hong Kong/Macao high schools equivalent to Grade 11 (Senior High School Year 2) in Taiwan are eligible to apply; however, they must complete an additional 20 credits before graduation.

2. Equivalent Qualifications

Applicants with qualifications equivalent to Taiwan’s academic degree system may apply, subject to official review and recognition.

IV. Language Proficiency

Some programs may require applicants to submit proof of language proficiency.

  • Accepted tests, minimum scores, and language requirements are determined by individual departments or programs
  • Language requirements may vary by program and admission cycle

Applicants must refer to program-specific admission information for applicable language requirements.

V. Required Application Documents

Depending on the admission category and program, applicants may be required to submit documents including, but not limited to:

  • Application forms and document checklists
  • Academic diplomas and transcripts
  • Proof of nationality or identity
  • Language proficiency certificates (if applicable)
  • Statement of purpose, recommendation letters, or other supporting materials
  • Proof of financial resources
  • Required declarations or verification documents
