Introduction

The School

    Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU) is situated in Taichung City, Taiwan, and was founded in 1960 as a dental school. Over time, it has expanded into a comprehensive university focused on medicine and health sciences. CSMU currently offers over 20 undergraduate majors and 27 graduate programs at both M.S. and Ph.D. levels in various fields, including medicine, dentistry, nursing, allied-health professionals, and more.

The Hospital

   Adjacent to the university campus is a 1,300-bed hospital that offers students an extensive range of medical and health science education opportunities. The CSMU Hospital has been recognized by the Taiwanese government as one of the 25 leading medical facilities on the island. It provides more than 1 million out-patient services, as well as a significant number of operations and health examinations annually. The hospital employs thousands of well-trained physicians, dentists, nurses, and other health professionals, making it a significant health education hub in the area. In recent years, the hospital has implemented smart healthcare to keep up with medical technology advancements and the growing complexity of diseases. The hospital remains committed to providing top-quality medical services to patients.

The Office of International Affairs

   Established in 2011, the Office of International Affairs at CSMU aims to promote global mobility among students and faculty and provide them with a global vision to enhance their professional career development and prepare them for future challenges. Over the last decade, we have increased our partner institutions from 29 in 2011 to 107 in 2021 to execute our projected plan successfully. Through mutual agreements with our partner universities, we have developed various activities, including long- and short-term student exchange programs. These programs have enabled many students to benefit from international study plans such as summer internships, summer camps, student conferences, and semester-/year-long studies abroad. Every year, a significant number of students from different countries come to our campus or hospital for clinical training, studies, or to experience different cultures in Taiwan, while an equal number of our students go abroad for similar opportunities. We welcome these incoming and outgoing programs and plan to expand these activities further. We also hope to attract more institutions to collaborate with us in the future.

   In addition to promoting global mobility, the Office of International Affairs at CSMU serves as a consulting center for students who are interested in pursuing further degrees abroad. Our office offers information and guidance to students on various joint degree programs and double degree programs available in different disciplines. However, we strive to establish more programs with our partner institutions in the future to meet the demands of our students.

The Taiwan …                                                                                           

   The island of Taiwan, historically referred to as "Formosa" by Portuguese sailors in the mid-16th century or earlier, is situated on the eastern edge of the Asian continent. With an area of 35,808 square kilometers, Taiwan is dominated by over 200 mountains (> 3,000 m), which cover two-thirds of the island. Despite its relatively small size, Taiwan is home to slightly over 23 million people, making it one of the world's most densely populated areas. Taiwan boasts one of the largest economies, driven by its IT industry, semiconductor production, computer manufacturing, and other sectors. Additionally, Taiwan is a democracy state for over 30 years and was the first country in Asia to legalize same-sex marriage.

   Taiwan experiences a range of climates from subtropical to tropical, with pleasant temperatures throughout the year. However, occasional typhoons in summer and earthquakes are common natural disasters on the island. Taiwan is recognized for its post-disaster recovery capabilities and studies, which has earned the country global recognition. The people of Taiwan are friendly and hospitable, and foreigners are safe here. The island boasts a rich cultural heritage, and traditional Chinese cultures are well-preserved. Taipei City is the capital and the largest city on the island. With its modernized mass transportation systems, Taipei is a very convenient place to travel. The High-Speed-Rail, which operates on the western coast of the island, makes island travel easy and affordable.

 

 

The Taichung City …

   Taichung City, located in central Taiwan, has a rich history dating back to the early 17th century when Chinese immigrants and local aboriginal tribes settled in the area. The city was officially named Taichung in the early 19th century during the Japanese colonial period and has since become a modern metropolis. Today, Taichung is the second-largest city in Taiwan with a population of approximately 3 million people. The city benefits from a pleasant subtropical climate with temperatures averaging around 26°C in May, similar to Florida and Texas in the United States. Taichung is surrounded by natural beauty, including mountains and coastlines, with the famous Sun Moon Lake just a 70-minute drive away. The city is also known for its delicious food, with a variety of options available throughout the city, including the famous Fengjia Night Market. Other attractions include the Miyahara Eye Hospital, rainbow military housing, Calligraphy Greenway, Gaomei Wetlands, and National Taichung Theater. Notably, Taichung is the birthplace of Pearl Milk Tea, a popular drink invented in the city in 1983.
