Department of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology

Nature of the Speech Language Pathology and Audiology

The major of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Chung Shan Medical University is designed to cultivate speech-language pathologists and audiologists in Taiwan. We offer a 4-year undergraduate program in speech-language pathology and audiology. Students complete coursework on campus during the first three years and are expected to finish their off-campus practicum in the fourth year, usually at hospitals, rehabilitation clinics, welfare organizations where providing services to whom need special needs, or schools providing special education.

Our master’s program aims to encourage certified clinicians to advance their learning in this field. MA students are expected to complete their master’s theses as one of the graduation requirements besides course credits. We provide opportunities for those whose undergraduate degree is from fields other than speech-language pathology or audiology. If you seek a certificate after graduating from our MA program, you are expected to finish courses and graduation requirements both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. On average, our MA graduates spend 4-5 years in total to complete the curriculum, the 1-year practicum, and the thesis. If you are not certificate-seeking or already have a certificate, you have fewer required courses to take and do not need to finish another practicum.

We are looking for driven, hard-working, and compassionate students who love to work with people with special needs. Our field develops rapidly and has a great need. Our programs are here to help you become the person you would like to be and equip you with the tools you need to become a well-suited speech-language pathologist or audiologist!

Why Department of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology in CSMU?

The Department of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology at Chung Shan Medical University was established in 1994 to address the critical shortage of speech and hearing professionals in Taiwan during the 1990s. Initially part of the Rehabilitation Medicine Department (復健醫學系), it holds the distinction of being the first department in Taiwan to concurrently cultivate students for both speech-language therapist and audiologist licenses at the undergraduate and master's levels. Consequently, it stands as the most historically significant department in Taiwan specializing in the fields of speech and hearing.

The department takes pride in its highly qualified faculty, diverse range of courses, extensive teaching resources, and a well-organized internship system. Graduates from the program are employed both domestically and internationally. The pass rates for national certification exams for both speech-language therapists and audiologists consistently surpass the national average, frequently achieving a perfect 100% over the years. As a result, the department has earned its reputation as a leading and benchmark institution in the realm of speech and hearing in Taiwan.
